Stella McCartney, the designer known for her leather-free and fur-free fashions, is venturing into the world of ingestibles. Let us explain.

The British designer, who already has a skincare line called Stella, has introduced a range of gluten- and GMO-free edible supplements called Alter-Care that purportedly help protect the skin by preventing collagen destruction and protecting against premature aging, WWD reported.

“I’ve always been interested in the relationship between good nutrition and skin health, which is why I wanted to incorporate an edible skin supplement into my skin care range,” McCartney told WWD. “It took a while to create the perfect formula and to propose something different in the beauty industry. There aren’t that many brands, at least none that I’m aware of, that have created skin supplements using only vegan, 100% natural-origin ingredients and which are supported with strong clinical results.”

McCartney may be right that there aren’t many fashion brands experimenting with skin supplements, but the global wellness industry is doing, um, quite well…generating $5.6 trillion in 2022, per the Global Wellness institute. By 2027, it’s projected to hit $8.5 trillion, up from $3.4 trillion in 2013.

That’s a huge jump, aided by an avid interest in skincare and wellness both by existing beauty brands and some fashion names. From Chanel and Dior—which have launched their own skincare brands in recent years—to Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Victoria Beckham, who collaborated with Augustinus Bader for a skincare line, the industry appears to be thriving.

Still, while skincare supplements may still be somewhat niche, especially for fashion brands, McCartney’s bright orange Alter-Care capsules might change that.
