Black Friday spending grew an impressive 7.5% over last year, but it was on the cannabis industry’s answer to the shopping day, Green Wednesday, when the growth was really—in every sense—smoking.

For the day before Thanksgiving, sales at retail recreational dispensaries were up 11.43% over the same day last year, according to data provided to Retail Brew by Jane Technologies, a digital provider whose platform is used by more than 3,000 retail and medical dispensaries.

While Jane represents only a portion of the industry, its retail customers rang up $9.2 million in cannabis products on Green Wednesday.

Hopefully, the dispensaries had an extra budtender or two on the floor, because compared to the average of the three Wednesdays preceding it, sales on Green Wednesday were up 90.5%, according to Jane.

Bowled over: StateHouse Holdings, a publicly traded California company that spans cultivation, processing, manufacturing, distribution, and retail, told Retail Brew its Urbn Leaf and Harborside retail cannabis chains saw big bumps in their online orders:

  • The stores’ websites notched a 16% YoY increase in online revenue on Green Wednesday, stemming (pun, as always, intended) from a 21% increase in web traffic and a 29.2% increase in online order volume.

Pick and chews: Edible cannabis products are popular on Green Wednesday, one explanation being that the products can be consumed discreetly on Thanksgiving while Uncle Gary is holding forth on the intricacies of the deep state.

Weedmaps, an app that offers delivery service, saw a 9.4% YoY increase in order volume for traditional cannabis flower on Green Wednesday, but the increase for edible products was nearly twice that, 18.5%, according to Weedmaps data cited in our nominee for the best-named cannabis business news website, Ganjapreneur.
